school principal faces allegations of violating a california law that requires certain people to report possible child molestation. >> reporter: a elementary school principal went on trial today at this courthouse. he is charged with failing to report a teacher who may have molested a student a year ago. that teacher is a waiting trial. an 8-year-old who took the stand said that she told the principal that chandler had blind folded her and touched her. >> her duty is to report, not investigate. once she has a suspicious she needs to call the police. >> reporter: detectives took the stand today and testified that they acknowledged her notes indicated misconduct. >> she said the notes look bad don't they? and the detective said yes. >> she said i should have called the police. >> reporter: the attorney said that the principal was fooled by a teacher she trusted. >> she didn't have to ask him or prompt him. each of the things that the child had said were covered by the statement that the teacher gave and were explained as part of a lesson and it was clearly designed to cover the cond
the storm brings inland bringing showers to the northwest. and parts of the rockies and california. the southwest stays dry. here in new york a crane that snapped from sandy's high winds continues to dangle more than 70 stories up. it is right down the street from this building. john miller spoke with two city engineers who took on the dangerous task of making sure the crane doesn't fall to the street below. >> reporter: during the storm that snapped the boom off the crane with winds gusting through and swinging the hanging boom back and forth two new york city building department engineers had to get to the top of the building and answer the question would the boom hold or come crashing down? for most of the long climb the only way up was the stairs. >> i've never heard anything as loud as wind howling in my life as we got to the 48th floor and you have to apply so much pressure to open the door. i was with him. we got into the hallway and you could almost get sucked right out. >> reporter: michael and timothy had to check each of the structural braces that held the tower with the

a shooting at the university southern california. four people were hurt when shots were fired outside the school's campus center. police say an argument started between two men not associated with the school. one of the victims was criminal cali injury -- critically injured. the other three had life threatening injuries. >>> a california man speaking after being attacked by a shark. >> that's right. the 25 -year-old scott stevens was attacked while surfing. he was likely attacked by a juvenile great white. the shark graped him and pulled him under water. then he started to fight back. >> my eyes under water and punched the shark in in the side of the head. >> a fellow surfer helped him hold the bite together to try to minimize the bleeding. . he plans to buy a new board and get back in the water. >> virginia man wanted for throwing pipe bombs at three homes arrested in montana today. police believe that lawrence stuart targeted them because of his previous run ins with the law. he was first arrested back in october for exposing himself. he will face charges of attempted murder. >
the country. a lot of states that were spared that were not hard hit or some states as far away as california, they have pledged to start getting equipment crews etc. here into new jersey and new york and connecticut as quickly as possible. as power starts coming back on, we want to make sure that people can also get to work. there are a lot of folks in jersey who work in new york, in the city, and in other places where transportation may be hobbled. one of the things that i mentioned to the governor is the possibility of us using federal assets military assets as well as taking inventory of assets from around the country that can be brought in so that we can help people get to their work. we're going to have a lot of work to do. i don't want anybody to feel that some how this is all going to get all cleaned up overnight. i want to make sure that people have realistic expectations, but what i can promise is that the federal government will be working as closely as possible with the state and local officials, and we will not quit until this is done. we're not going to tolerate red tape. we're

in more than 40,000 extra workers from 49 of 50 states. in california, the air force began airlifting more than 60 utility vehicles to new york today, aboard huge cargo planes. and tonight, these workers from alabama pitching in near hard hit atlantic city. >> they understand the value that comes from being able to serve others. >> reporter: at its peak, more than 8 million customers had no electricity. it's half that number now. and a million more get their power back each day. better than after hurricane irene. on long island, we found this crew working 16-hour days, their own homes without electricity, repairing a downed line for powerless residents. >> i saw the truck down the street. i said, i hope you're coming my way. >> reporter: the crew was. and moments later, lights came on for the first time since monday. >> hey! >> we just got our lights back. thank you, lord. >> reporter: these workers here, they are replacing a telephone pole, utility poles that we blown over by the storm. it is slow work. takes about two hours to remove and replace each one of them, it gives you some idea w

california to try to help new york clean up sandy. 69 vehicles from southern california were flown in from the west coast. they also sent generators and water pumps to help with clean-ups. the navy will be on stand by in case the state government asks for them help. and now, picking up the pieces from sandy. staten island is a 60 square mile portion of new york city and it suffered some of the worst devastation from the storm. 19 of the city's deaths happened on staten island and today, i toured some of the hardest hit areas and spoke with residents just beginning to pick up the piecing of their shattered lives. this is quincy avenue and you still can't get close to house number 845. that's where barbara and her son, christopher, barely survived the storm. >> we stayed 11 hour onss on the roof. we kept yelling help to everyone we see. nobody was coming. nobody. >> their neighborhood, destroyed. the water rose feet in just minutes. they escaped with their lives, but suffered unimaginable loss. >> we were told the next day, looking for my sister, she was found dead in her apartment -- we hav
california campus remains on lockdown at this hour. in fact, the university just released an alert to students telling them to seek shelter, stay indoors and avoid opening doors for unknown people. the shooting suspect still remains at large. we have learned that several victims, possibly up to four, have been taken to local hospitals in los angeles. witnesses telling the l.a. times this morning that the shooting happened at a party in the center of campus at the tudor campus center which seems to be a student union on campus. the witness is telling the "l.a. times" that there was a party celebrating halloween. it was max capacity inside. at least 100 people inside and outside. gunmen came up and just started shooting and at least they believe four students were shot. looking at the reports, we're hearing one of those students may be in critical condition, but we're trying to get more and more information. a lot of stuff coming out on social media now. keeping in touch with the "l.a. times." >> thanks a lot. weps we want to get back to the race
are in the hospital after two separate shootings in california. the first shooting at a halloween party at the university of southern california. four people were taken to the hospital. one of them in critical condition. two people are in custody. the second shooting happened in hollywood. three people were hurt after someone fired shots into the crowd. one person is in critical condition. tlae people have been arrested. >>> overnight, we learned that charges will be filed against graham spanier today. the "pittsburg post-gazette" reports he's being charged with obstruction of justice. last month, sandusky was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison. >>> police are investigating an armed robbery just off the campus of the university of maryland. this happened in the 7300 block of baltimore avenue just after 2:00 this morning, right in the downtown college park area near the college park shopping center. police did alert students about this robbery. there is still a search going on for suspects. >>> right now, federal agents from as far away as ohio and indiana are looking for the man who
